Getting Started

Common FAQs

We are thinking of renovating or extending. Where do we start?

Start with an architectural draftsman to work out what can be achieved on your site. We can connect you with one of our draftsmen or designers who offer a free initial consultation.

What is the difference between a Master Builder and a Licensed Builder?

All building works must be undertaken by a Registered Building Practitioner. You can verify a builder’s licence by calling the Building Practitioners Board on 1300 360 320. Master Builders are registered practitioners who have demonstrated significant experience and knowledge, admitted to the Master Builders Association. To confirm MBA membership, call 9411 4555 or visit mbav.com.au.

Do I need a Master Builder for my project?

Not necessarily, but it is highly recommended. Master Builders carry an additional layer of accountability and are required to maintain Continuous Professional Development (CPD). Your home is likely one of the largest investments you will ever make. It is worth protecting.

Can the builder provide references?

Absolutely. Any reputable builder should freely provide references for past and current projects. We are happy to connect you with previous clients.

Is the builder eligible for warranty insurance?

You should ensure your builder provides a current Letter of Eligibility from their insurance company, which covers defective and incomplete work.

Should my builder provide a Domestic Building Contract?

Yes, for any works over $10,000 in value, a Domestic Building Contract (Act 1995) is required. The MBA’s contracts HC6 (new buildings) and HIC5 (renovations and additions) both comply.

Who can tell me if I need building permits or planning approvals?

Your local council, builder, or draftsman can assist. We handle permit applications as part of our service and can advise from the outset.
